New science class lights up gifted students in Bozeman, Montana

Ninth-grader Leyla Kirschner is a good student who doesn’t usually stand on top of desks at Bozeman High School and toss pens around, but last week she did so in the name of science.

“I like this class, I’ve always liked science,” Kirschner, 14, said, after climbing off the desk. “This is a pretty cool experiment.”

She’s one of about 50 freshmen taking a new science class at Bozeman High created just for gifted students.

The guy who had her stand on the desk was also pretty gifted n Trevor Douglas, one of Montana State University’s best-known research scientists.

Bozeman High teacher Brian Swarthout invited Douglas to his two gifted science classes to give ninth-graders hands-on experiments with solar energy and to expose them to a real-world science problem.
