Montana gets a C on financial security

When it comes to achieving financial security, Montana residents face mixed prospects, according to a report released by the Corporation for Enterprise Development, a national economic nonprofit.

The state earned a C on the 2009-2010 Assets and Opportunity Scorecard, with Montana performing well in housing and some business ownership measures, but falling behind the rest of the country in income and health insurance.

The scorecard ranks the 50 states and the District of Columbia on 58 performance measures in the areas of financial assets and income, businesses and jobs, housing and homeownership, health care and education.

Montana earned an F in financial assets and income, indicating that residents are unprepared for financial crises. The state ranks 50th in average annual pay, 48th in asset poverty and 41st in both extreme asset poverty and net worth.
