Tastes like home: Lolo company, Montana Food Products helps Missoula students bite into food grown locally

Tucked away in the corner of the little shopping center here, a public-private effort is transforming the way Missoula schoolchildren eat.

At a time when the benefits of eating locally are widely recognized, Missoula County Public Schools are doing just that by working with a fledgling business that couples local foods with its own proprietary concoctions.

"What we have going here is something that’s good for kids, good for taxpayers and good for the local economy," said Edward Christensen, assistant supervisor of food and nutrition services for MCPS.

The district had slowly dipped its toes into the local food movement for a couple of years, but the arrival of a new player on the scene, Montana Food Products, quickened the immersion.
