Hardin, Montana jail signs contract with California firm to house prisoners
September 10, 2009 /
The Hardin detention center that was offered as a facility for terror suspects this spring after sitting vacant for two years has signed a 10-year contract to house prisoners for a private police company with international operations.
Greg Smith, executive director of Two Rivers Authority, said the contract will bring a first-wave of about 200 medium- to minimum-security prisoners, and eventually enough prisoners to fill the 464-bed facility.
The $27-million facility, which was built to house state prisoners, drew international media attention in April when the Hardin City Council voted to seek a contract for holding Guantanamo Bay terror suspects.
