McLaughlin Research Institute adviser, Jeff Frelinger, details his diabetes research

North Carolina research scientist Jeff Frelinger on Friday described his promising research to curb Type 1 diabetes at the McLaughlin Research Institute’s http://www.montana.edu/mri/ annual biomedical sciences workshop.

Frelinger, a longtime member of McLaughlin’s scientific advisory committee, was one of 16 speakers at the daylong workshop attended by 80 Montana scientists and doctors.

In an interview, the University of North Carolina medical school professor said his lab spent five years developing a way to prevent Type 1 diabetes in mice by destroying cells that cause the disease.

"We’re getting pretty confident that this approach will work, and we’re hopeful we can make enough progress to apply it to human patients," Frelinger said.
