City Club Missoula – Provost Royce Engstrom Speaks on why the University of Montana must educate more people at a more sophisticated level.

To meet the demands of a global society, the University of Montana must educate more people at a more sophisticated level.

So said UM Provost Royce Engstrom http://www.umt.edu/provost/ on Monday at the monthly City Club Missoula http://www.cityclubmissoula.org luncheon.

Engstrom said UM wants more students enrolled in the university, more integration among disciplines, more connections between real-life problems and classroom work, and more state investment in higher education.

On average, a college graduate earns $1 million more in a lifetime than a high school graduate, Engstrom said. More than personal gain, however, communities whose population is college-educated benefit from the added leadership skills – which in turn lead to greater cultural and economic development, he said.

However, he said, none of this is possible without money.

“Unfortunately, the news is not so great on that front,” Engstrom said.

According to the study “Trends in College Spending” http://www.deltacostproject.org/resources/pdf/trends_in_spending-report.pdf released by the DELTA Project in January 2009, Montana is ranked 50th in the country in terms of state spending per student at a public research university.

“(The state) needs to increase that investment,” Engstrom said.
