Montana Senator Jon Tester hosts contracting workshop in Great Falls – Federal agencies will emphasize local contractors for stimulus work

Senator Jon Tester today announced that two federal agencies overseeing some contracts for upcoming federally funded construction projects in Montana will put an emphasis on hiring local subcontractors for the work.

The decision is a result of Tester’s efforts to involve as many Montana businesses as possible to work on projects funded by the recently passed American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, also known as the Jobs Bill.

I’d like to congratulate Ken Richardson of CTA Architects Engineers http://www.ctagroup.com/ for bringing a concern to the attention of Montana businesses and legislators. His proactive efforts have resulted in significant legislative action to address the inequities that appear to be part of the stimulus package. Thanks to his efforts, Senator Tester has now taken up the issue with the highest levels of federal government. It’s through leadership like his that the business climate can improve and become more competitive and transparent in all of its dealings.

Thanks for your efforts Ken.

The workshop on Saturday was a "who’s who" of Montana movers and shakers. A standing-room only crowd of hopeful contractors looking to get involved in stimulus projects had the rare opportunity to ask direct questions of high-ranking federal representatives – and Senator Jon Tester himself.

Montana firms can bid on one border project

By MICHAEL JAMISON of the Missoulian

GREAT FALLS – Montana’s general contractors will have a crack at bidding at least one federal stimulus job on the state’s northern border, but four other projects will go to pre-qualified, out-of-state firms.

Those outside companies, however, will be encouraged to hire up to 70 percent of their sub-contractors from the local business pool.

“There’s no doubt in my mind that if Montana companies are given the chance, they will win” the contracts, said Sen. Jon Tester, D-Mont.
