Cascade County, Montana will test wind-energy storage battery

A U.S. defense contractor is planning a major test in Cascade County of how well battery technology can capture and store Montana’s wind-generated electricity.

While the county will host the research, the $307,000 project is being privately financed by Helena-based Exergy Development http://www.exergydevelopmentgroup.com/ , which built the Horse Shoe Bend wind farm outside of Great Falls, and NorthWestern Energy, the state’s largest utility.

On Tuesday, Cascade County commissioners approved an agreement with Alexandria, Virginia-based Ashlawn Group LLC http://www.ashlawngroup.com/ that will allow the company to conduct a year of research on a "vanadium redox battery."

The work will occur at the new 50-kilowatt wind turbine at the county Road and Bridge Department northwest of Great Falls off the Vaughn Road.
