Florence, Montana start-up, US Omega3 Foods eyes food processing
When carrots show up on lunchroom plates at Victor School, most students will never wonder where they came from.
But, unlike most of the well-traveled items in the typical school lunch – institutional food is often trucked many miles across state lines – those carrots were likely made into coins or sticks just down the road in Lolo at Montana Food Products.
This new storefront is a food processing center that offers food growers and entrepreneurs certified production space for temporary lease. The 5,600 square-foot facility also produces and packages some of the products offered by its parent company, US Omega3 Foods http://www.usomega3foods.com/ of Florence.
For US Omega3 Foods managing partner Ron Oberlander, the venture into food processing facilities is a way to flesh out his own business while filling a void he believes only hinders the small, local food producer. There are a very few facilities available for the grower or entrepreneur who wants to take a new product to market, Oberlander said.
