‘Insider’ Entrepreneurs – Become an intrapreneur by developing a new process, product or service within the context of your larger organization. & The Art of Commercialization by Guy Kawasaki

Last week, when I queried people in my network to see if they knew any intrapreneurs, people responded with stories about friends who had left large companies to start their own businesses. Seems they — like many people — confused intrapreneurship with entrepreneurship.

An intrapreneur doesn’t quit her job to do her own thing. Instead, she develops a new process, product or service within the context of a larger organization. Using the resources and capabilities of the larger firm, an intrapreneur transforms a good idea into a profitable venture.

The Art of Commercialization

Commercialization is the flip side of intrapreneuring. In this case, an organization (company, laboratory, or university) that owns some technology decides to let others run with it instead of creating a product or service. The organization’s logic goes like this:

“The technology we invented for satellite imaging can be used for amateur video, so we could have created YouTube and sold to it to Google for $1.6 billion. With that lesson learned, let’s find an investor to fund a company to commercialize some of our other technology. How hard could it be to create the next company for Google to buy?”

I’ve been on the other side of the table when these organizations try to negotiate a deal to spin off, license, or sell their technology. It’s almost always a Mission: Impossible to get a deal done because most organizations try to stipulate conditions like these:
