Starting Up: Economy is rough, but you can still succeed

"If I knew a startup was this hard, I would have started a long time ago."With spring upon us and baseball season on deck, it’s appropriate to quote one of baseball’s Hall of Famers and Master of Malapropism, Yogi Berra. OK – He didn’t say this. But I can well imagine that if Mr. Berra ever started a company in today’s economy, this statement would have popped from his mouth like a fly ball.

There are many parallels between a baseball season and managing your company through the current economy – especially a young company. And like a baseball season, hopes are as bright as Opening Day, and slumps seem to manifest at will.

Good baseball managers follow specific philosophies and actions. It’s important to practice the fundamentals, establish goals and team chemistry. Then build on each win and learn from each loss. Combine this with a little good fortune here and there, and a successful season will result. This is remarkably true today for any company irrespective of size or industry.

So how to succeed? What would Yogi say?

"You can observe a lot just by watching."
