Saskatchewan offers $60M for carbon project with Montana

The Saskatchewan Party government is prepared to put in $60 million for a large-scale carbon capture project in co-operation with Montana.

Now it’s waiting to see if U.S. President Barack Obama will pony up.

Premier Brad Wall, who just returned from Montana, where he met with Gov. Brian Schweitzer, said the project’s price tag is $170 million.

The proposal would see Montana kick in $60 million, but the state — which unlike Saskatchewan does not collect energy royalties — would require federal dollars to make it happen.

Another $50 million would come from the private sector.

"I’m optimistic because the governor and I agree on some important things around cap and trade and on technological solutions, and we’re hopeful he has the support of the Obama administration," Wall told reporters at the legislature.
