State, local officials discuss Ravalli County college plan

With plan for a local community college recently nipped in the bud and a University of Montana-run Hamilton Higher Education Center drawing lackluster support, a new push has emerged that officials hope could bear educational fruit by fall.

A representative from the Office of the Commissioner of Higher Education, Mary Sheehy Moe, along with a trustee from the Board of Regents and a University of Montana representative, spent Friday in the Bitterroot briefing interested parties on launching a state-funded pilot project for two-year education this year.

Though Moe, who is deputy commissioner for two-year education, was quick to point out that no definitive plan is yet on the table, the goal is an innovative Montana University System-run model that would incorporate many of the principles that the community college advocates were fighting for – namely some local say in how the program was run and what kind of courses it offered.
