Bitterroot Valley Community College plan goes before Legislature

February 12, 2009View for printing

“If you build it they will come.”

The community college debate brought its show to the Capitol on Wednesday in a late-in-the-game chance for Ravalli County residents to voice support for a new two-year institution in the Bitterroot.

With the national recession practically incarnate and sitting in residence here, the fate of the Bitterroot Valley Community College has been put in SJ 12, a resolution that would grant legal approval of the creation of the Bitterroot Valley Community College (BVCC) without authorizing any funding for it until 2011 at the earliest.

In a hearing long on sports metaphor, advocates lined up more than 20 strong to take a swing at convincing the legislators of the Senate Education and Cultural Resources Committee that it was time to approve the college.
