Scam artists at work in difficult economy

Marion McMillan thought the call sounded too good to be true.

The telephone message said a private/government consortium called the Cash Grant Institute had $50 million it was dividing up into grants for people in need.

“I didn’t need the money myself, but I have some family members who could use some help,” McMillan said. “I just wanted to see what it was all about.”

So she called the number back several times. Each time, the operator on the line said they were swamped with calls and told McMillan to go online to receive more information.

The Hamilton resident balked at the thought.

“I wasn’t sure about the security on my laptop,” she said. “You just never know … still this whole thing just bothered me.”
