OUR OPINION: Let North Dakota University System keep power over tuition

As the North Dakota Legislature debates whether to take back the power over college tuition, it’s easy to forget why lawmakers gave away that power in the first place.

Here’s why. The reasons were spelled out plain in the document that sparked the change. “A North Dakota University System for the 21st Century,” also called the Roundtable Report, came out in 2000 and became the most important document to influence state government in a generation.

The Roundtable Report sparked pathbreaking legislation in the 2001 and 2003 sessions. The reforms now have had years to take effect — and the results are clear: Some fair meas-ure of North Dakota’s current prosperity and resilience stem from the Roundtable reforms.
