Utah Microenterprise Loans Help Small Businesses Get Started and Grow

Sarinda Jones, owner of Reflective Art Studio, had a passion for glass art and a growing demand for her work, but little capital to turn her passion into a full-fledged money-making venture.

With a need for equipment and materials and limited resources with which to purchase them, she turned to the Utah Microenterprise Loan Fund (UMLF), a local non-profit community development financial institution. There she secured a $10,000 loan and purchased jewelry, glassware equipment and materials.

Kathy Ricci, executive director of the Utah Microenterprise Loan Fund, could see that Jones had the drive, determination and creativity to make her small business prosper and grow. "We were inspired by her dedication and her excitement was contagious," Ricci says. "However, when you are trying to start a small business on a shoestring, traditional funding sources may not be an option."
