Smurfit-Stone files Chapter 11… could help sawmills, others in Montana

Smurfit-Stone Container Corp., the largest producer of cardboard box materials in North America, said Monday that it has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection as it looks to restructure a heavy debt.

Smurfit-Stone bankruptcy filing could help sawmills, others

Smurfit-Stone Container Corporation’s filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy may be good news for the network of sawmills and other businesses it works with.

“For those people supplying them (wood) chips or candy bars for their vending machines, it means you will be paid in full,” said Todd Morgan, a timber industry analyst with the University of Montana’s Bureau of Business and Economic Research. “Before the filing, most mills in Montana said they were going to wait and see what was going to happen. They would suspend sending them anything until after Smurfit-Stone made a statement or filed for bankruptcy. They’ve done both, so now folks should be set to sell to them again.”
