Helena in good shape economically, city manager says

City leaders on Thursday shared local economic news and briefed the Hometown Helena group gathered at the Montana Club on the state of several community programs.

City Manager Tim Burton told the room that Helena was riding the economic crisis well, although the city may need to consider various cost-saving measures, including salary freezes, if the situation worsens.

Still, Burton said, the city’s finances were strong overall. He said Helena hasn’t yet developed a budgetary reliance upon funds collected from new construction, which has slowed over the past year, leaving some other cities in a bind.
