Denver and Colorado Springs also ranked among the top 15.

The Boulder-Longmont area is home to 17,000 software-related jobs, which
account for 5.8 percent of its population, according to the study conducted
by the Washington, D.C.-based Software & Information Industry Association.

The rankings are for 2000 and are based on the number of software-related
employees divided by population. The Boulder-Longmont area has topped
the charts for three consecutive years. Technology giants Sun Microsystems
and IBM Corp. are the area’s largest software employers.

Denver ranked ninth with 2.3 percent of its population, or 47,880 people,
working in software-related positions. Colorado Springs placed 12th with 2.2
percent, or 11,280 jobs.

"Software talent is highly portable – those folks are in high demand and they
can live anywhere they want to live, which means employers that need
those folks tend to locate in those areas," said Rocky Scott, president of the
Greater Colorado Springs Economic Development Corp. "Colorado is
obviously an attractive location for that talent."

Software-related positions included in the study were programmers,
engineers, systems analysts, database and network administrators, and
analysts and support specialists.

"Colorado is really very well represented," said Anne Griffith, research
director for the industry association. "Fort Collins is not that far down the
list."

Fort Collins ranked 35th with 1.4 percent, or 3,400 jobs.

San Jose placed second with 5 percent of its population, or 89,470 people,
holding software-related positions. San Francisco was third at 3.8 percent, or
65,770 jobs.
