Montana counties get unexpected federal funds

In a turn of fortune, and in a rare 100-percent commitment from U.S. Congress, Montana counties are receiving previously unexpected checks from the federal government, along with a guarantee they would get a larger chunk of a rural schools and roads package that stalled on Capitol Hill this summer.

Officials in three local counties said the hundreds of thousands of dollars in new cash has saved jobs and will pay for needed equipment replacement. The money was attached to the $700 billion economic bailout package passed several weeks ago.
