Rocky Mountain Laboratories makes effort to reach out to Montana community

More than a century ago, many Bitterroot Valley settlers distrusted government-sponsored research into the deadly Rocky Mountain spotted fever that plagued the region.

Uncertain of what was going on in the tents, woodsheds and abandoned buildings that served as makeshift labs for years, Hamilton residents went to court in 1927 to oppose construction of a modern entomological facility in the middle of town by the fledgling Rocky Mountain Laboratories http://www3.niaid.nih.gov/about/organization/dir/rml/ .

The lawsuit failed and the building became the cornerstone of the National Institutes of Health campus, a 33-acre facility that has grown to be a major part of Ravalli County’s way of life.
