Will alternative energy be Idaho’s next big industry?

While lawmakers consider how to stimulate the growth of green energy, eastern Idaho has already snagged one company, with others planning to follow.

The drive to reduce greenhouse gases and the potential for billions of dollars in new federal money could make alternative energy as hot a prospect for Idaho now as information technology was in the 1990s.

Economic development experts say the state faces stiff competition from its neighbors – especially Oregon, which offers generous tax breaks for alternative energy businesses. But Idaho lawmakers are no more interested in matching Oregon’s tax breaks than they were to fund similarly targeted tax credits for the state’s high-technology businesses.
