Official questions Rocky Mountain Supercomputing Centers funding request

Butte-Silver Bow officials have a long list of questions for a nonprofit group’s request for $380,000 in taxpayer money to support a supercomputer project.

While Rocky Mountain Supercomputing Centers, or RMSC, has attempted to answer many of those questions, commissioners are scheduled to further discuss the request when they meet on Tuesday.

They could decide at that time whether to approve RMSC’s funding request.

Supercomputer project holds promise

We’re understandably skeptical around these parts, what with all the ghosts of failed economic development projects past hanging around, but this Rocky Moun-tain Supercomputing Center seems different.

For starters, the State of Montana has already made a sizable investment in this project, and the governor is squarely behind bringing it to Butte. Recent news reports tell us that — ready or not — this computer is coming to the Thornton Building on Dec. 27.
