Missoula eyes $50 million from feds for biking, walking trails

With support from U.S. Sen. Max Baucus and Mayor John Engen, the city of Missoula is positioning itself to secure as much as $50 million in federal transportation funds should the appropriation become available.

A report released Monday by the Bikes Belong Coalition and the Rails to Trails Conservancy calls for major federal investments in bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure. According to the report, called “Active Transportation for America,” a big outlay in the upcoming national transportation bill would pay off, reducing oil dependence, curbing climate change and tackling obesity.

With an already active population and existing infrastructure, Missoula is poised to be a pilot program, said representatives from the city Parks and Recreation Department, the Bike-Walk Alliance for Missoula and Adventure Cycling Association. At a news conference held Monday at Parks and Rec headquarters, Dave Shaw said Missoula could fill the gaps in its biking and walking routes and create a seamless system.
