In Montana, businesses still getting loans, so far

The meltdown of the nation’s financial markets has so far spared many Montana businesses, owners around the state say, although many are nervous and some say banks are less willing to lend.

Economists and lawmakers feared that as national banks collapsed under bad debt, it would seize up the credit markets, making it more difficult for Montana businesses and consumers to get needed loans.

But owners of credit-dependent businesses around the state, from car dealers to McDonald’s franchises to farmers, say so far things are OK here. Many said they deal through local banks, which are for the moment healthy.
