High schoolers in Great Falls, Montana put to work for ‘The Company’

High school is work. No, really — at least, it’s work for the students enrolled in business classes at Great Falls high schools who are participating in a new office-designed learning model called "The Company."

Renovations this summer to business classrooms at both C.M. Russell and Great Falls high schools involved tearing down walls and creating larger classrooms — ahem, workspaces — including individual cubicles with computers for the students — uh, employees — working on different projects.

"We’re trying to get these kids ready for a real-life work experience," said Tom Kotynski, career and technical education director for the district.

Kotynski said there can be as many as 11 different classes all being taught at the same time.

Placing work at the heart of education

All the students work somewhere — at more than 100 companies and law firms — one day a week, at jobs paying $20 an hour, the money going directly to the school, covering 70 percent of its costs.
