State legislators urge passage of 6-mill levy for Montana university system

If the mill levy that supports Montana’s colleges and universities fails Nov. 4, the Legislature will have to find the money elsewhere, lawmakers told the University of Montana President’s Advisory Council on Friday.

The 6-mill levy provides more than $13 million a year from property taxes to Montana’s colleges and universities. It is renewed by voters by referendum every 10 years.

“If it does fail, if it does go down, I don’t think the Legislature has any option but to step up and make up for it,” said state Sen. John Brueggeman, R-Polson, one of four legislators at the meeting.
