A Montana ranch owner who made millions in the Silicon Valley has expanded his conservation efforts by giving The Trust for Public Land $3.9 million to use in the Madison Valley.

The organization said Roger Lang’s gift will be used to establish the Sun Ranch http://www.papoosecreek.com/ Fund for land purchases and other actions contributing to protection of the valley’s open space and agricultural heritage. The Madison River flows through the valley, which has become increasingly popular in recent years as a recreation and second-home getaway.

Lang bought Sun Ranch, west of Yellowstone National Park, about 10 years ago and has undertaken a number of conservation initiatives. They include placing nearly all of Sun Ranch under conservation easements that restrict development regardless of whether ranch ownership changes.
