Gazette Opinion: Invest in mass transit for Montana

Rising gasoline prices are a powerful reminder of the value of public transportation. Mass transit is limited in our state and region, but it still provides essential transportation for many Montanans who choose to conserve fuel or cannot drive their own vehicles.

A million dollars in grants recently awarded to a dozen Montana communities will help keep public transportation running in remote towns and larger cities. The money comes from the Federal Transit Administration, which is funded by the federal gas tax. The state of Montana allocates the grant money through a competitive application process. The awards cover 86 percent of costs with federal funds and the local recipients pay the balance.
