Peace Corps To Honor University of Montana As Top Producer Of Volunteers. MSU senior seeks to make a difference in Peace Corps.

Ron Tschetter, the Washington, D.C.-based director of the Peace Corps, will speak at The University of Montana on Thursday, May 29, to honor UM for being a top producer of Peace Corps volunteers.

His appearance will be at 2 p.m. in the Turner Hall Dell Brown Room. The event is free and open to the public. Tschetter will present a plaque that will hang in UM’s Office of Career Services.

Since the Peace Corps was established by President John F. Kennedy in 1961, more than 700 UM graduates have served as volunteers. UM now ranks 17th for producing volunteers among medium-sized universities and colleges with enrollments between 5,001 and 15,000. The University currently has 23 alumni serving in the corps.

An information session for those interested in the Peace Corps will be held later that day from 7 to 8 p.m. in the Dell Brown Room.

Tschetter is the 17th director of the Peace Corps and the third director to have served the corps as a volunteer. He and his wife, Nancy, were Peace Corps volunteers during 1966-68 in India, serving as community health workers.

Before becoming Peace Corps director, Tschetter was president of the largest full-service investment firm in the Northwest, Montana-based D.A. Davidson.

MSU senior seeks to make a difference in Peace Corps

Growing up, Jessica Gausman loved hearing her dad’s tales of serving in the Peace Corps in Malaysia and traveling to exotic places.

He had a trunk in his office filled with souvenirs — a copy of the Koran, books with stories carved inside and other neat mementoes.

“I loved hearing him tell stories, where he’d been, what he’d done,” she said. “I always wanted to make my own stories.”

Gausman, 23, seems well on her way. On Saturday she is graduating from Montana State University with a bachelor’s degree in political science and highest honors.
