Stimulus act has provisions to aid small businesses

Small businesses may benefit from two provisions tucked into the $152 billion economic stimulus plan passed by Congress in February.

Enhancements for small business include a temporary depreciation bonus, helping businesses buy new equipment in 2008 by offering a bigger depreciation – about 50 percent of the purchase price.

The Economic Stimulus Act 2008 also increases small-business expensing levels. In 2008, a small business can expense up to $250,000 as long as its qualified equipment purchases do not exceed $800,000. Previously, the small-business expensing limit was $128,000 with a cap of $510,000.

The list of qualifying equipment ranges from machinery to office equipment to tractors, computers and other items.
