Cost of climate policies waiting to be addressed

When polled, the majority of Americans say climate change is occurring and that something needs to be done about it, said Dave Wheelihan, chief executive officer of the Montana Electric Cooperatives Association.

"But there’s a disconnect when people are asked how much they are willing to pay to ‘do something,’ " he said.

Support for policies to curb greenhouse gas emissions drops to less than 10 percent as the potential price tag rises, he said.

The potential cost of one federal policy being debated in Congress now, the Lieberman-Warner Climate Security Act, could cost Montana households between $709 and $2,299 by 2020, the state 4,000 to 6,000 jobs by then, and $365 million to $506 million in Montana’s gross state product.
