Montana University system / Rein in energy, loan entities, regents told
| March 7, 2008 |
Gov. Brian Schweitzer's budget director didn't stay long at the Montana Board of Regents meeting, but David Ewer had the board's full attention during the hour he spoke, and his pointed comments lingered long after he left.
Ewer delivered two distinct messages to the regents, both in a no-nonsense manner, on Thursday: Campuses must decrease energy consumption, and regents must better monitor the nonprofit agencies that manage millions of dollars in federal funding the state receives for student loans.
The 2009 Legislature will be a “belt-tightening” session, he said, and if the Montana University System truly intends to take its proposed $80 million in long-range building priorities to Helena, those projects should reflect the governor's initiative to reduce state energy costs 20 percent by 2010.
The governor's support, particularly on significant budget items, will be needed if the proposal is to have traction in the upcoming session, Ewer said.
