Former St. Mary’s principal on the hot seat

By Peter Vandergrift, Enterprise Staff Writer

The superintendent at the Choteau School District who became embroiled in controversy this week after inviting, then disinviting, a Nobel Prize winning scientist to speak to Choteau high school students was previously the principal at St. Mary’s Catholic School in Livingston.

Kevin St. John was principal at St. Mary’s School from 2005 to 2008.

St. John said the decision to cancel the Wednesday presentation to the ninth through 12th grade students was made because he did not have time to quell the misunderstanding in the community about what scientist Steve Running was presenting.

According to St. John, community members voiced their disapproval of the Running school presentation to trustees, who discussed the issue with him.

He then made the decision to cancel the talk.

“I think the decision is explainable and understandable,” said St. John, Friday. “The whole thing was surreal.”
