Montana State University Career Fair is largest in school history

More than 180 employers will be on the Montana State University campus Wednesday, Oct. 3, as MSU hosts the largest career fair in the event’s 20-year history.

The fair will run from 9 a.m. through 3 p.m. in the SUB ballrooms, SUB rooms 275 and 276 and on the Centennial Mall.

"We would have had even more employers if we would have had room," said Carina Beck, director of the MSU Career Services. "It’s just a great time to host a career fair."

And, it’s a good time to be an MSU student looking for a job, Beck said. That is despite national stories that indicate an uncertain economy.

"Yet, employers are hiring college graduates," Beck said.

Beck speculates that the reasons are two-fold. Employers are beginning to replace retiring baby boomers, or boomers who are reducing work hours.

"And, they are looking for good talent," Beck said. "Most of the employers we talk to are looking for the right talent and are willing to invest in that search. That’s something we haven’t heard before. There are a lot of opportunities for students."

There are particularly a lot of opportunities for MSU students of all majors, she said. While engineering students are always highly sought, and this year is no exception, "some of the same companies (looking for engineers) are also looking for finance majors, accountants, business managers and graphic designers."

"We have banking, retail, government is very strong right now." There are employers looking for good thinkers, good communicators and good writers, she said, so students from all majors will benefit.

Some of the companies at Wednesday’s fair include Boeing, Micron Technology, RightNow Technologies, Zoot Enterprises, Genie Industries, the Mayo Clinic, "which is looking for applicants in almost any major." Many of the companies will stay over for a day or two to conduct interviews.

"There will be great opportunities to create a launching pad (including internships) for all students," Beck said.

Profiles of each company slated to be in attendance are also listed on the Career Services Web site, http://www.montana.edu/careers/.
