Montana University System Names Associate Commissioner

A Helena native who returned to Montana last year to direct institutional research for the Montana University System has been appointed its associate commissioner of higher education.

Tyler Trevor will begin his new job on July 15, subject to final approval from the Montana Board of Regents, said Commissioner Sheila Stearns.

"I’m excited about the opportunity to work more closely with campus leaders, as well as the governor’s office and the legislature," said Trevor, a Montana State University graduate who worked in Nevada and California before returning to Montana in April 2006.

Stearns said, "We feel very fortunate that someone with Tyler Trevor’s experience and expertise† is willing to step into this vital position. He will work regularly with legislators, business and labor leaders, research and technology faculty, to name a few. I know they will find him very knowledgeable, approachable, and helpful as a liaison with the Montana University System."

A national search resulted in an internal reorganization and promotion within her office, Stearns said. Trevor will direct information resources, strategic planning, communications and media relations, government relations, economic development and operations management for the Montana University System. Before Trevor, Dave Gibson served as associate commissioner of technology, research and communications. He resigned to become the Montana president of Qwest, and Cathy Conover served as interim associate commissioner for six months. Conover is director of the Office of Communications and Public Affairs at MSU.

Trevor has been director of institutional information and research for Montana’s Office of the Commissioner of Higher Education since April 2006. From 2003 to 2006, he was assistant vice chancellor for academic and student affairs and director of institutional research in the Nevada System of Higher Education. Prior to that, he was executive director of institutional research and assessment at Truckee Meadows Community College in Reno, and coordinator of institutional research and analysis at College of the Siskiyous in Weed, Calif.

Trevor earned two bachelor degrees from MSU. He received his political science degree in 1992 and a sociology degree in 1994. In 1995, he earned a master’s degree in applied sociology/research methods from Humboldt State University at Arcata, Calif.
