Bozeman company, Wind Innovations pitches wind energy idea with $80,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture

Smaller and less-expensive ways to gather energy from the wind could be on the horizon, helped in part by a pair of federal grants.

Wind Innovations, a new company working in Bozeman, is hoping to develop "wind fins" as an alternative to traditional turbines. Instead of circling blades, these devices would include a single mast — comparable to a beefy flagpole — and a "fin" that looks something like a flag hung vertically, which then oscillates in the wind.
