Western Rural Development Center – Rural Connections Spring 2007 Vol. 2 Issue 1

Those of us who work in community and economic development often focus our attention on traditional retail businesses, value added agriculture, renewable energy production, or recreational tourism to stimulate a local economy. Yet promising and exciting areas of economic development focused on arts-based community development, sustainable development, and cultural tourism are emerging as viable economic development tools for rural people and places.

Communities throughout the rural West are being impacted by changes in their community’s shifting economy, and they are finding themselves in need of new development models. But what are some of these forces that are impacting the rural West?
