GIS system a treasure trove of Helena and Lewis and Clark County area maps

An investment Helena and Lewis and Clark County officials began making years ago is paying off in a big way, and the future possibilities for the services provided by the joint city-county geographic information system are limited only by officials’ imaginations.

The system, more commonly known by the acronym GIS, combines reams of data city and county officials already had – road centerlines, property and district boundaries, addresses, building heights and footprints, the locations of sewer mains and more – with geographic reference points and high-quality aerial photographs, allowing staffers to create detailed maps in two or three dimensions.

The system isn’t under lock and key – the GIS Center sells printed maps and photos to the public, and provides as much of its information as possible through Web sites, where residents may download maps and photos.
