32nd Annual First Interstate Bank Montana Economic Outlook Seminar

Rising asia: becoming closer neighbors

Presented by The University of Montana Bureau of Business and Economic Research and First Interstate Bank. Cosponsored by the local area chambers of commerce.

Program description

At the 32nd Annual Economic Outlook seminar Phil West, Mansfield professor and former director of the Maureen and Mike Mansfield Center at The University of Montana, will discuss economic development and opportunities for trade throughout Asia. Expanding on the ties Mike Mansfield established between Montana and Asia, Professor West will also address issues that come with rapid growth such as rising living standards, rising consumption, and rising environmental problems. In addition, he will draw upon his many visits as student, scholar, and leader of Montana delegations to China, Japan, and Korea. Bureau researchers and other experts will examine recent trends and the outlook for Montana’s important industries – nonresident travel, health care, agriculture, manufacturing, and forest products. Our luncheon program titled “Perspectives from China” will feature Bob Brown, senior fellow at UM’s Center for the Rocky Mountain West, who has visited China three times since 1996. His most recent visit was during spring semester of 2006 as an exchange professor of Public Administration and International Relations at Nankai University in Tianjin. Professor Brown will share his perspectives and impressions on the rise of modern China.

Seminar starts at 8 a.m. and ends after the luncheon at about 1:00 p.m.

2. Oil Sands National Buyer/Seller Forum in Edmonton March 13-15, 2007. The website is http://www.nationalbuyersellerforum.ca I hope you can share it with those who may find opportunity in attending.

3. A few websites you might find useful (compliments of Steve Bixby with MorTech):

This first link takes you to a flight tracker where you enter in the airline, the flight number, and the date and it gives you up-to-the minute info about that flight. Great for figuring out just when to leave the office to meet someone at the airport:

http://www.flightview.com

This next one is similar but doesn’t seem to be quite as current on flight details. It does, however, let you see the history of a particular flight to see how "on time" it is. And there are a lot into Missoula that aren’t on time very often!

http://www.flightstats.com

If you get the emailed FITA newsletter, you probably saw this one, but it’s worth repeating. This link is to a lists computerized customer service lines, giving the code to get around the automated menus and talk to a real person. I used it today!
