Restoration priorities sideline competitive whitewater park (and significant economic development) opportunities at the new confluence of the Clark Fork and Bitterroot Rivers in Bonner, Montana

Not long after talk first began about restoring the confluence of the Clark Fork and Blackfoot rivers, people started stepping forward with a variety of ideas for the future of the site.

There could be trails winding through the newly reclaimed river bottoms. Some thought an interpretive center – providing a glimpse into the area’s past and future – would be nice.

Early on, when plans called for building a graded structure in the Blackfoot River to protect a number of bridges just upstream, some even threw out the idea of creating a whitewater park to attract rafters and kayakers.

But that idea died a quiet death after the state of Montana began putting together its restoration plan for the confluence of the rivers.
