University of Montana Leads Global Technology Development Initiative

The University of Montana’s Information Technology Office recently completed a project that will help educational institutions worldwide collaborate on the development of advanced Web technologies.

In June 2006, UM was commissioned by CampusEAI Consortium – a global, nonprofit organization that focuses on helping educational institutions implement e-business solutions – to lead a project to create the Community Development Center.

By facilitating the exchange of programming code, documentation and expertise, the Community Development Center will allow technology professionals to build on the ideas and work of other member institutions.

UM Director of Web Technologies Gordy Pace headed a group of consortium representatives who envisioned the center and directed the project. UM programmers Jamey Maxwell, Spencer Wolny and Tyler Murray designed and built the center.

"The Community Development Center is good for UM because we’ll be able to implement emerging technologies faster and cheaper than we could if we tried to build them on our own or had to buy from a vendor," Pace said. "This is why we joined CampusEAI – to be part of a community of great institutions openly sharing knowledge and building on one another’s work and innovative ideas."

Since 2003, UM has been a partner with CampusEAI in implementing a Web portal and Internet-based television programming. The consortium has 140 members in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, India and China.
