The Salish and Kootenai College in Pablo receives $398K for Truck Driving and Heavy Equipment School

The Salish and Kootenai College in Pablo has been awarded $398,311 to
help fund its Highway Construction Training School.

"SKC has done a remarkable job training heavy equipment operators and
truck drivers," said MDT Director Jim Lynch. "The college serves a key
role in providing skilled individuals to work in the state’s $350
million-a-year highway construction industry."

The On-the-Job Training Supportive Services Program will provide Native
Americans and women with training services focusing on recruitment and
financial aid application and packaging, through admission,
registration, career counseling, job placement services and retention.
The program includes tutoring and daycare for participants in the
highway construction industry.

Funding of the OJT/SS program is through the U.S. Department of
Transportation and administered through the Montana Department of
Transportation. The program provides on the job training/supportive
services projects with a primary focus on increasing the representation
of minorities and women in highway construction and transportation
related careers.

In August 2006, SKC was awarded by the Federal Highway Administration
the Minority Institution of Higher Education Achievement Award for this
program.
