Livingston, Montana’s super-low unemployment rate creates problem

It’s an employees’ market in Livingston.

With an unemployment rate of less than 3 percent, business owners and managers are struggling to hire and keep workers.

"There’s nobody in this town to work," co-owner of 2nd Street Bistro Brian Menges said. "Pretty much anyone who wants to work has a job."

A 4 percent unemployment rate is considered full employment, according to Al Maurillo, manager of the Livingston Job Service Work force Center. Livingston’s 2.5 unemployment rate is so low people are working who don’t want to, he said.

In some cases, retired workers have been asked to fill in by friends who are short of help.

‘There just aren’t any workers’

Many businesses are stuck with open positions despite advertising campaigns.
