New electric line doubles power flow. Aluminum conductor works well in the heat

Throughout the hottest June on record and a wickedly hot period in late July, Arizona Public Service Co. officials were thanking their lucky stars for power-line technology.

That’s because they had just strung six miles of state-of-the-art conductor, at a cost of about $2.5 million, into downtown Phoenix that kept the Valley’s cool against temperatures that climbed as high as 118.

"I don’t even want to think what the overload would have been, or the impact of that, if we were still using the old lines," said Paul Richards, construction projects manager for APS.

The accolades are reserved for a 3M Corp. innovation that more than doubles the quantity of electricity flowing through its new conductor lines.
