The Top Business Schools: Something Old, Something New

The lead in The Wall Street Journal/Harris Interactive ranking of America’s top National business schools seesawed again this year, with the University of Michigan reclaiming the No. 1 spot from Dartmouth College.

Michigan and Dartmouth are clearly the schools to beat, with Dartmouth having achieved a first-place finish in three of the Journal’s six annual rankings and Michigan now having scored two wins. (The University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School is the only school that has succeeded in beating Dartmouth and Michigan.)

M.B.A. recruiter Karen Dizon, a senior associate at Diamond Management & Technology Consultants, says it’s often clear by the final round of job interviews who’s well-read and who isn’t. Ms. Dizon doesn’t typically ask candidates what they’re reading, but conversations through the recruiting process, which includes receptions and other social events, give her a sense of a candidates’ hobbies and interests, such as reading.

CareerJournal.com spoke with Ms. Dizon, 32, who runs the firm’s internship program, about the books she’s recommend to M.B.A. students outside their usual curriculum. The Chicago firm, which employs 449 full-time consultants, hired 15 b-school interns this year and offered most full-time jobs on graduation.
