Using the HR Intranet to Transform Job Evaluation

Job evaluation, long a key component of many compensation
management programs, can provide several important benefits.
Internal equity is enhanced. The market value of jobs, including
unique or hybrid roles, can be easily established. Finally, in volatile
times, job evaluation provides important contextual information to
help determine whether specific jobs are over-priced or under-priced
in labor markets.

At the same time, job evaluation has several widely perceived
drawbacks that have given it a bad reputation in many quarters.
Often perceived by managers or employees in the field as a
bureaucratic and time-consuming process, job evaluation is also
viewed as subject to political gaming, with information tailored to
produce the "right answer".

In fact, the drawbacks perceived in connection with job evaluation
ultimately arise from the process, rather than from the nature of job
evaluation itself. It is our conviction, based on experience, that
intranet technology can transform the job evaluation process to
eliminate the disadvantages while retaining the benefits.
The balance of this brief white paper will review how the intranet can
transform the job evaluation process, the new risks posed by intranetbased
job evaluation and how these can be overcome.

Many perceived job evaluation
drawbacks arise from the
process, rather than from job
evaluation itself. Intranet
technology can transform the
process to eliminate the
disadvantages while retaining
the benefits.
