Vision for Schools – Gov. Gregoire: Washington State must improve education to compete globally

Gov. Chris Gregoire told an audience Thursday in Vancouver that Washington must invest in a world-class education system if it hopes to retain its competitive edge in the global economy. A new report says the state’s schools are failing to prepare many students for jobs in a 21st-century work force.

Gov. Chris Gregoire http://www.governor.wa.gov has a vision for a "Next Washington" that competes globally, nurtures its regional economies and educates its students to fill jobs now held by skilled workers coming from out of state.

She shared that vision in Vancouver on Thursday with hundreds of educators, economic development officials and labor leaders who are concerned about matching worker skills to available jobs.

Maintaining the state’s competitive edge will require overhauling public education, she said: "It’s the single most important investment we can make for the future of our state."
