Havre seeks county help with port authority

The port authority committee met Wednesday with Hill County Commissioners to ask them to be a part of the port authority formation. “We are here on behalf of the mayor,” committee chair and City Council member Bob Kaftan said. “We want to invite you to be part of the port authority. We would like it to be a joint venture with the county. We just think it’s a great opportunity for the city and the area.” The Commissioners said they’d think about it, but first they needed to ask the people they represent.

“In order for us to make an informed decision, we would have to go on the road and go to the people,” Commission chair Kathy Bessette said. “Two-thirds of taxes paid in the county are paid outside of Havre,” commissioner Doug Kaercher said.NEW Kaftan said a team from Butte may be present at the next meeting on port authority. The next one hasn’t been scheduled yet, Mayor Bob Rice said today, adding that he wanted to speak with the committee before he answers any questions or schedules the meeting.
